Frequently Asked Questions
What is the project?
Households across the country are suddenly without breadwinners because of escalating federal immigration actions. The No Strangers Project was created by a coalition of social services agencies to help the families who have been left behind.
Donations to No Strangers go through a fiscal agent, Catholic Social Services, and out to community partners who provide food, personal care items, clothing, prescription medicines, and other necessities.
Who will this help?
Families in our community hold various immigration statuses.
Some were granted Temporary Protective Status or Humanitarian Parole as they escaped life-threatening conditions. These protections allowed them to work and support themselves.
Others are asylum seekers, who are in the country without authorization and are not eligible for federal benefits. They need to work to survive. With more aggressive immigration enforcement, many have been detained, deported, or let go from their jobs.
In the last several months, the federal government has terminated these statuses and revoked employment authorizations.
Is my money going to the Catholic Church?
No. Catholic Social Services will distribute funds to community partners who give direct aid and resources. Donations go into a restricted account to be used only for the No Strangers Project.
Why shouldn't I donate directly to the community partners?
The No Strangers Project links community partners with resources in place of direct donations by design. Social services agencies formed No Strangers to help shield organizations and their clients from harassment. Additionally, collaborative fundraising allows donations to be distributed based on need rather than being tied to each partner's fiscal or marketing limitations.
Is this political?
The political, legal, and ideological issues surrounding immigration policy can be argued in the courts, legislatures, and federal agencies.
In the meantime, people need to be cared for and provided with some means of survival.
For those who care, there are no strangers.
